MINIC: Understanding the Impact of Taylor Swift using Economics, Law and Culture
An elective course for students in Grades 8 - 11 offered by the Enrichment Mini-Courses Program, University of Ottawa. 5 days.
This immersive week‑long course introduces students to Taylor Swift as a cultural, legal, and economic force whose influence stretches far beyond music. Beginning with an engaging introduction to Swift’s career and The Eras Tour, students explore how her work shapes global conversations about copyright, artistic ownership, fandom, and the creative economy.
Through sessions such as “Taylor Swift and Copyright Law”, “Taylor Swift and Economics”, and “Taylor Swift and Culture”, students examine real‑world case studies that reveal how one artist can transform industries, challenge legal norms, and mobilize communities. Interactive activities—including music video analysis, colouring, friendship bracelet‑making, trivia, and a special end‑of‑week project—help students connect academic concepts to the vibrant world of Swift’s artistry. By the end of the course, students will understand how Taylor Swift’s choices and career illuminate broader questions about creativity, power, culture, and the marketplace.
