SDCC2019 - Preview Night
Preview night at Comic-Con is… high stress and high energy! For those attendees dying for SDCC Exclusives (that is, merchandise only available at Comic-Con) it’s a mad scramble to get to your favourite vendor for a limited supply of merch. For those too.. thrifty to pay top dollar, it’s a slightly less mad scramble to booths for free swag.
I fell into the second category. An aspiring minimalist, watching people drop hundreds and thousands of dollars on collectibles was nerve-wracking. Don’t get me wrong - I picked up loads of free or almost-free swag over the past two days (from a signed Luann poster to a free Dark Horse Comics pin) - but it was free…
That said, there is something inspiring about watching people wait hours on end and spend their side-hustle savings on a limited edition Iron Man figurine. And, as a volunteer pointed at my fan art tattoos, it was a stark (Ha, see what I did there), reminder that everyone expresses their love and fandoms differently, and that everyone has their own Comic-Con experience.
